CHINA EXPAT INTERVIEW
Julia Gama, Miss World Brazil in 2014 and an Actress here in China, shares her best tip for learning Chinese.
Kwadwo: Hi, Julia.
Julia: Hi. How are you? We live in China. And, if you want to learn Chinese let’s learn together because.. Good, good study. Day, day up.
Kwadwo: So I’m here with Julia who was Miss World Brazil, 2014, and an actress in China.
What’s your one tip, Julia?
Julia: Absolutely, what changed my life, it was the mindset Chinese people are here to help me. They are so friendly. In other countries, maybe you can be ashamed of practicing a new language, but in China, no, people will help you, will support you.
Kwadwo: Learn real Chinese. Communicate. Have fun.
Julia: They want you to learn to be able to communicate because they are willing to communicate with you. Some people ask me on my Instagram because I talk a lot about living in China…
Kwadwo: Yeah.
Julia: “Oh, should I learn Chinese first because I don’t know anything?” No, don’t wait. Don’t waste time. Come to China, be shameless, and really go for it because your experience in China after you have some basic Chinese will be even more amazing. And I can say also… He didn’t ask me to say this… He changed my life because I was trying to do what I am saying you to do-
Kwadwo: Thank you.
Julia: Every day, but alone was harder. And I was part of his first Accelerator Group.
Kwadwo: Chinese Accelerator. You were, you were.
Julia: Yes. And he gave me very good tips, not about grammar or-
Julia: You’re nice.
“What’s in the books is not useful in our daily life in China.”
Julia: Those things that we find in the books, I mean… But especially the things that we live in China because what’s in the books is not useful in our daily life in China. That’s why some people get so frustrated, so build your crew, the daily people that are with you, and take them to teach you Chinese, and practice with them every day. And every day you will become better. It’s amazing because now I’m so excited because I’m meeting you because we live in different parts of China.

Kwadwo: We never met before… Before this week.
Julia: Yes, exactly, but I feel so close to you because he is so amazing and open person.
Kwadwo: I pour my heart into the students that are inside of my Chinese Accelerator. I really give it my all.
Julia: We absolutely feel it.
Kwadwo: Yeah.
Julia: And it’s amazing the support that we have and the encouragement that we receive, and also gathering with other people that are also in China that’s struggling with the same things is awesome because you don’t feel stupid… Because sometimes we took so long to learn Chinese that we start feeling stupid and think that we cannot anymore. But yes, we can.
Kwadwo: She’s right.
Julia: And it’s worth it. I have goosebumps. It’s so amazing.
Kwadwo: It’s worth it.
Julia: So I mean, here when I met him-
Kwadwo: Yeah.
Julia: And every sentence I try, and it works, I’m like, “Kwadwo, Kwadwo, I can speak. It’s working.”
Kwadwo: You were really genuinely happy.
Both: Good, good study. Day, day up.
