CHINA EXPAT INTERVIEW
Make Chinese friends and immerse yourself in the culture — Jideofor shares how he became fluent in Chinese.
So, guys, I’m here with Jideofor, and he’s going to share that one thing that’s helped you learn Chinese the best. Okay? By the way, my name is Kwadwo. I’m the creator here at Elementary Chinese.
He knows what he’s talking about. He runs the sourcing business. People contact him from Nigeria, right?
Jideofor: Yeah, from Nigeria.
Kwadwo: And he gets what they need in factories here, and he has to speak Chinese.
Why make Chinese friends?
Jideofor: The one thing that’s helped me learn Chinese is making lots of Chinese friends.
Kwadwo: Easy, why?
Jideofor: They’re there in China, right? That’s the first thing.
Second thing is, when you make Chinese friends, then it just forces you to immerse yourself in the culture.
Kwadwo: Right.
Jideofor: You get to hang out with them, you get to drink with them, you get to eat with them. And then you learn a lot about the society.
Kwadwo: If you want to reach out to him, because you need products from China, well, get in touch.
Jideofor: No matter what, you’re going to be having these little vibes of Chinese language all around you. So, when that’s happening, all of a sudden you’re going to find out like, “Oh, now it’s not just a barrage of words.” You’re starting to hear words individually.
So, you speak Chinese with your Chinese friends?
Jideofor: Yeah, that’s it.
Kwadwo: Obviously.
Jideofor: When you get in trouble, you can’t find your way around, all you just have to do is call up a Chinese friend that is going to help you get around. So, that’s the good thing about making Chinese friends.
Kwadwo: And this is Kwadwo, Elementary Chinese.
Both: Good, good study day, day up.

Want to use the VPN I use for a stable, quick connection in China? I depend on it to upload more than six videos a week and live-stream on Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram. And here’s my second choice for a VPN. Plus, when you download from either link, they share some of the cost with me, so I can keep creating the videos you love.
