Is Chinese For Dummies Any Good?
I know your mamma didn’t raise no fool. Is this book any good?
I’m reviewing the second edition of Chinese for Dummies. One of the first things I noticed when opening this book was the sheer quantity of content inside.

They provide pinyin, traditional and simplified characters, which is good. That’s great if you want to understand the characters that you’ll see on the mainland peoples republic of China and the more complex or traditional characters that you’ll see in the provinces of Taiwan and Hong Kong.
They have regular pinyin and also pseudo pinyin, almost English transliteration sounds. All this information is invaluable. It’s just a bit much in one place. Feeling kinda overwhelmed.
One thing I do love is the list of culture faux pas that you want to avoid when you get here. Invaluable information!
They do have an audio CD. For anyone who has read my other reviews, you’ll know my obsession with listening practice. It’s one of the most valuable forms of practice to get to grips with tones and accents. This is exactly what I did when I was studying in Beijing. It’s detrimental to your language learning experience.
It’s a shame that this content is arranged in an off-putting way. The information is crammed on the page.
It’s quite hard to digest into bite-size learning.
Although the presentation is a bit lacking the information inside this book is solid. And, they have a practical explanation of Chinese sounds in a way that we regular folks can understand.
Speak Everyday Chinese
If you don’t already have a book that has audio head over my online course where you can practice your accent along with me as I teach you the phrases that we use the most often here for day-to-day situations.
