CHINESE PHRASES
One of the most frequent questions I get from students on my online course speakeverydaychinese.com is “what do I ask in a restaurant or bubble tea shop when I want to know what the server recommends?”
It’s tough when there are so many choices. Decision fatigue is real. It’s even harder when you can’t read half the stuff on the menu and you just want to eat delicious hot food or the most popular bubble tea drink.
Today I’ll teach you (and myself) how to ask what dish or drink the restaurant recommends. Read below to find out how.
How To Say “Recommend”
The word for recommend is 推荐 tuī jiàn.
What do you recommend here?
这儿推荐什么?
zhèr tuī jiàn shén me?
The lady in the shop told me I was wrong!! Too formal, not appropriate here or what local people would usually say.
This is what I love about going into real stores in China and asking real people questions. Even after 11 years in China I still get stuff wrong. I use the wrong words and people correct me. Be humble. Allow yourself to continue on your language learning journey, however far into it you are. Don’t feel embarrassed to speak or get things wrong. That’s all part of the learning process. Mistakes help you learn.
Four Ways To Say ‘What’s The Best Selling Thing In Your Store?‘
你们店里面卖的
nǐ men diàn lǐ miàn mài de
最火的是哪一个
zuì huǒ de shì nǎ yī gè
你们店里面卖的
nǐ men diàn lǐ miàn mài de
最好的是哪一个
zuì hǎo de shì nǎ yī gè
Here’s the thing, drink, dish it’s all covered with this phrase. If you want, you can replace store (店 diàn) with restaurant (饭馆 fàn guǎn).
Comment below if you’ve asked another way and the server has understood you? I’d love to learn other phrases and hear from the Elementary Chinese community. Good good study, day day up.
